DOE ARM Aerial Facility

Montag, 08. Juli 2019, 11:00-12:00
KIT Campus Nord, IMK-AAF
Gebäude 326, Raum 150

Aerial observatory capabilities of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility are operated by the ARM Aerial Facility (AAF). The AAF provides airborne measurements required to answer research questions proposed by scientists from around the world. The AAF enhances surface-based ARM measurements by providing in situ measurements of aerosols, clouds, and trace gases not possible by using surface- or satellite-based techniques. ARM acquires airborne measurements during intensive field campaigns or long-term, regularly scheduled flights. Once collected, data from the aircraft are documented, checked for quality, integrated into the ARM Data Center, and made freely available for use by the scientific community.

The AAF operates a fleet of both manned and unmanned aircraft. The Gulfstream-159 (G-1) research aircraft retired in 2018 after serving ARM for 10 years. AAF has recently purchased a Bombardier Challenger 850 Regional Jet to replace and expand AAF’s measurement capabilities. The new research aircraft is expected to fly its first ARM campaign in Fiscal Year 2022. In addition to full-sized aircraft, ARM is expanding its use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and tethered balloon systems (TBS) to gather in situ atmospheric measurements. Efforts by the AAF team are underway for scientific test flights of the Group III UAS the ArcticShark, in preparation for a call for proposals in the near future.
