The atmospheric water cycle is a key element of the climate system, and its variability and extremes fundamentally matter for society. Identifying the processes leading to variability and extremes is difficult due to the wide range of scales involved. It is argued in this presentation that by combining atmospheric transport modeling tools and stable water isotope observations new insight can be gained into the dynamics of the atmospheric water cycle. Examples are presented ranging from airborne stable isotope observations in the Mediterranean to reconstructing paleoclimate from tropical cave deposits.
