A signal-to-noise paradox in climate science

Dienstag, 05. Juni 2018, 16:45-18:15
CS, IMK-TR0, Geb. 30.23, 13.OG Seminarraum

There is mounting evidence that climate model predictions may show higher correlations with observed variability than would be expected from their small signal-to-noise ratios; hence a ‘signal-to-noise paradox’. We show that this surprising behaviour is evident in the Atlantic sector on both seasonal and decadal timescales and for both winter and summer. Important implications for seasonal to decadal prediction, and for simulating climate variability and change, will be discussed.
