In the past decade, the emerging field of complex network theory has reached various scientific disciplines. The probably fastest growing area of application are climate networks, where graph-theoretical concepts are increasingly used for exploring the spatio-temporal patterns associated with climate dynamics on regional to global scales. In my presentation, I will present the basic concepts and ideas of climate network analysis and draw the link to classical EOF analysis, motivating why we believe that the network concept provides additional and potentially useful information that cannot be gained from classical multivariate analysis techniques. Besides some general considerations on this topic, I will discuss the results of two recent studies where climate networks have been successfully used for uncovering and characterizing climate variability patterns.
