Water vapour variability over the Mediterranean upstream of convective systems during the HYMEX SOP 1: an overview of the airborne LIDAR observations and comparison with mesoscale NMP models forecasts

In the framework of HYMEX SOP 1, the airborne water vapour differential absorption LIDAR LEANDRE 2 was operated onboard the SAFIRE ATR 42, over the Mediterranean. The overarching objective of the LEANDRE 2 detachment was to document the small scale variability of lower tropospheric water vapour at the regional scale, upstream of convective and heavy precipitation events. An overview of the LEANDRE 2 observations during the SOP will be given. Furthermore, the high resolution water vapour fields derived from LIDAR observations acquired during 22 ATR flights are systematically compared to 2.5-km resolution MESO-NH forecasts initialized from the 00 UTC ECMWF analysis (full resolution) and driven by the 00 UTC ECMWF forecast (updated with a 6 h frequency). They are also compared with 2.5-km resolution forecasts made with the NWP model AROME WMED for the same period. The main objective of this intensive water vapour intercomparison effort is to provide accurate error and bias estimates for the water vapour mixing ratio fields issued from these modeling systems.
