The European Commission and the European Space Agency are establishing an operational monitoring service for the global and regional atmospheric composition including greenhouse gases, reactive gases (both in the stratosphere and troposphere) and aerosols. The EU project Monitoring of Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC), coordinated by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), has built a modeling and data assimilation system which delivers routine analyses and forecasts of stratospheric and tropospheric ozone, carbon monoxide, dust, smoke, volcanic plumes and other tracers. MACC is the designated precursor for the future operational service. I will briefly describe the MACC project structure and services and highlight a number of recent research and development activities with a primary focus on the distribution of global reactive gases.
