The evolution of the mass of the Greenland ice sheet has been identified as one of the major unknowns in the context of past and future climate evolution. Beyond local consequences, a rapid reduction of the ice mass increases global mean sea level and the related meltwater fluxes are expected to alter the circulation of the North Atlantic. The ice sheet shape and extent is a complex balance of precipitation, evaporation, surface and bottom melting, and glacier ice discharge. Its simulation in numerical models requires a sound representation of the atmospheric circulation, properties of snow and ice at the surface, ice dynamics and tectonics occuring on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. Earth system models begin to tackle this challenge by including process based schemes for all of these components. A focus of the talk will be the modelling of snow and its impact on albedo and surface mass balance in an atmospheric general circulation model for three selected climate states.
