How does lansdcape heterogeneity and rainfall variability control integral water flows across scales?

Engineering practise has traditionally been either concerned with predictions of water driven hazards such as floods or with water resources management. Hydrological practice, however, still avoids operational forecasts in lower mesoscale catchments ranging from 10-200 km² (e.g., in the state of Baden-Württemberg). Why so? Such catchments at the lower mesoscale are systems of organised complexity. Hydrological response of these intermediate systems is strongly controlled by multivariate statistical and topological characteristics of patterns in the landscape (topography, vegetation, soil properties, preferential pathways) that dynamically interact with the space time patterns of boundary conditions as, e.g. precipitation. With respect to these issues questions are:  How does rainfall variability in concert with landscape heterogeneity determine the way how distributed hydrological processes translate into integral mass flows?  Which information about rainfall variability and landscape heterogeneity is needed to understand and model these processes and can we assess this information with the most recent measurement technology and models?  What are suitable model structure to reproduce and predict this dynamic interplay of connected structures, patterns and responses at the lower mesoscale? This seminar talk addresses these questions with selected examples that move up in spatial scales.
