Humidity and Cirrus Research with Passive mm / sub-mm Instruments

Dienstag, 16. November 2010, 15:00-0:00
KIT Campus Nord, IMK-ASF,
Gebäude 435, Raum 2.05
The talk consists of two parts. The first part is about recent research on upper tropospheric humidity (UTH) with MHS and its older siblings. Measurements from the 183+-1 GHz channel of these instruments can be used to derive an UTH product that is similar to traditional infrared UTH products, but less affected by clouds. The second and larger part of the talk is about the mission proposal CloudIce, which is one of the candidates for ESA's Earth Explorer 8. It is an evolution of the earlier CIWSIR mission proposal, with channels at up to 664 GHz. Quite similar channels have also been suggested for Post-EPS. The science background of a sub-millimeter cloud ice mission is discussed, and a strawman mission concept presented
