For the North Atlantic region, model simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, around 21,000 years before present) exhibit major differences in the atmospheric dynamics compared with today that are mostly attributed to changes in the topography. The presentation will focus on these differences and showing first how atmospheric high frequency react on the different boundary condition during glacial times. In particular circulation types are used to better understand the precipitation changes simulated during the LGM. Then, the changes of eddy driven jet during the LGM are analyzed in details showing a southward shift of the jet position under glacial conditions. To understand the underlying mechanisms for this shift both stationary and transient wave activity are identified to be relevant. |
