Title: Using hydraulic simulations for studies of turbulent atmospheric flows Abstract: This presentation addresses the possibilities and results of using large-scale hydraulic simulations to investigate the turbulence of atmospheric-type flows with 2D and 3D particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods. The 3D-PIV technique was specifically developed for hydraulic simulations of high-Reynolds number turbulent flows and is capable of extending typical 2D-PIV resolutions into 3D volumes without loss of resolution while resolving all three velocity components and its spatial derivatives. Three examples of hydraulic simulations of atmospheric-type flows are shown, including a neutral boundary layer over a rough surface, orographic internal-wave breaking and a generic case of decaying stratified turbulence. The 2D- and 3D-PIV results are used to determine the turbulence statistics and to analyse the large-scale dynamics of the flows.
