Abstract (2): The goal of COPE is to understand the life cycle of convective clouds that cause heavy precipitation, with a particular emphasis on the microphysics and dynamics of the clouds. The COPE field project took place in the south west of England (west of the CSIP domain) in the summer of 2013. The area is prone to flash flooding because of the convergence lines that regularly develop. The Wyoming King Air and BAe 146 aircraft made passes through the clouds and a Cessna aircraft flew in the boundary layer. The Selex X-band mobile radar scanned complete volumes of the clouds in the region with a return time of about 5 minutes. Aerosol particles were measured at the ground as well as on the BAe 146 aircraft. I will describe the project in this talk, present early results and look forward to challenges in cloud processes that we need to address in order to improve NWP models.
