"Land-climate interactions, climate extremes, and climate change"

Dienstag, 27. Mai 2014, 16:30-17:30
KIT, Campus Süd, Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung
IMK-TRO, Physikhochhaus, Geb. 30.23, 13. Stock Seminarraum
Land-climate interactions play an important role in the climate system. This seminar will provide an overview on the effects of soil moisture variability and land use and land cover change for climate, with a focus on extreme events and climate change. Recent investigations have highlighted the impacts of soil moisture-climate interactions for the occurrence of heat extremes, which is relevant for historical climate change, seasonal forecasting and climate scenarios (e.g. Seneviratne et al. 2010, Hirschi et al. 2011, Mueller and Seneviratne 2012). In addition, changes in albedo associated with land cover or land use change can also affect the temperature variability in summer. These processes are important for better understanding relationships between climate forcing and regional climate changes (Seneviratne et al. 2014).
