Nanoparticles and Clusters in Nature and Technology: Applications and Hazards

Freitag, 21. März 2014, 14:00-0:00
KIT, Campus Nord, IMK-AAF, Gebäude 326, Raum 150
During the last two decades, science and technology have made significant progress in the synthesis of nano-objects and the control of processes at the nano-level. One important branch of nano-science focuses on the physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles and clusters. There are many different kinds of such particles. One example is atmospheric particular matter. In many everyday products artificially engineered nanoparticles are already used. E.g., titanium dioxide nanoparticles are present in sunscreens with high protection factors. Clusters are much smaller and have properties that differ from those of the solid. Despite their diverse and fascinating properties technical applications of clusters are so far rare. Possible health risks of these particles are investigated in many laboratories with conflicting results. For any future applications the understanding of the size dependence of the physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles and clusters is essential.
