Cross-tropopause transport of water substance by convective storms and its implication

Dienstag, 07. Mai 2013, 15:00-0:00
KIT Campus Nord, IMK
Gebäude 435, Raum 2.05
Observations (satellite, aircraft and ground-based) show that deep convective storms regularly inject water substance into the lower stratosphere, a phenomenon that is largely ignored by most climate prediction models. Yet given the potentially long residence time of water vapor in the stratosphere, it is possible that the variability of the injected water can be an important climate forcing, especially because the vapor-infrared interaction is 2-3 orders of magnitude greater than that in the troposphere. In this talk, I will show various observational evidence of this cross-tropopause transport and use cloud model simulations of deep convective storms to demonstrate the physical mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of this phenomenon. I will discuss further implications and also some thoughts about future works to be done to understand and assess the significance of this process.
