Drivers for the variability in Noctilucent clouds

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are with an altitude of about 83 km the highest clouds in the terrestrial atmosphere. They occur near the mesopause during the summer months in each hemisphere at latitudes exceeding about 50 degress and consist of tiny water ice particles. Their formation and maintenance depends very sensitively on temperature, which makes them an excellent proxy for relatively small temperature variations (short-term and potentially long-term). They are discussed as indicators of global change, and long-term satellite observations of NLCs with the SBUV(/2) instrument series indeed show evidence for a long-term increase in cloud albedo. This talk will report on recent research on mechanisms that cause variability in the sommer mesopause temperature field and subsequently in NLCs. The topics will include the effect of short-term solar effects, such as solar proton events on the thermal and dynamical structure of the mesopause and NLCs, a recently detected 27-day solar cycle signature in NLCs, as well as first evidence for a QBO signature at the polar summer mesopause, which is transferred from the polar winter stratosphere via interhemispheric coupling. Finally, recent results on the fractal perimeter dimension of NLCs will be presented.
