Observation of Atmospheric Composition in the Middle Atmosphere by Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES)

Montag, 11. April 2011, 16:15-0:00
KIT Campus Nord
Gebäude 326, Raum 150
A new generation of super-sensitive submillimeter-wave receivers, employing SIS (Superconductor-Insulator- Superconductor) technology, provides new opportunities for precise remote sensing observation of minor composition in the atmosphere. SMILES performed the observation between October 2009 - April 2010 from the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) in the International Space Station (ISS). SMILES is a collaboration project between NICT and JAXA. The mission objectives of SMILES are: i) Space demonstration of super-sensitive SIS mixer and 4-K mechanical cooler technology ii) Demonstration of super-sensitive global observations of atmospheric composition JEM/SMILES observes the atmospheric composition, such as O3 and its isotopomers, HCl and its isotopomers, ClO, HO2, BrO, HOCl, HOBr, HNO3, CH3CN, H2O, and ice cloud with a precision of a few to several tens of percent. The altitude region of observation is from the upper troposphere to the mesopause. I will present the current status of the SMILES observation.
