The experimental generation of volcanic ash

Montag, 27. November 2017, 11:00-12:00

Abstract:  Experimental approaches to geosciences in general and volcanology, in particular, remain unknown to most outside of the geoscientific disciplines. Nevertheless, experiments have a long history of providing seminal advances in the evolution of earth sciences. Experimental volcanology is an extraordinary example of the development of a geoscientific discipline, Volcanology concerns itself with a key set of earth system processes and fluxes that occur at or near the Earth´s surface. Thus, volcanic processes, although very inaccessible in the field, occur in a regime of temperature, pressure and timescale that is very accessible in experiments. The result has been a rapid rise in the experimental approach to investigating volcanoes. I will highlight a line of experimental investigations that has led to the controlled generation of volcanic ash in the laboratory, showing its implications from the recent past and its potential for the future.

Bio: Professor Dr. Donald Bruce Dingwell is the Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology and the Director, Department for Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ludwig-Maximillian Universität, München.  His research foci include experimental investigation of the physics and chemistry of magmas and melts, and their volcanological, geochemical and petrological significance as well as interests in magma rheology and experimental volcanology. As a former Secretary General of the European Research Council, Professor Dr. Dingwell understands how to harness the power of scientific communication to create a sustainable bridge between science, policy-making and relevant administrators.
