The Namib Desert: An Illustration of Alexander von Humboldt's World View
21.07.2020, 16:45 - 17:45

An overarching theme in von Humboldt's work is the holistic approach to understanding the complexities of the natural environment.  Two centuries later this vision is what we now call earth systems science.  Examples of von Humboldt's holistic approach include his work on biogeography, climate and health, and the link between deserts and steppes.  The Namib Desert exemplifies this concept in many ways.  These include, for example, the relationship between the wind and surface features and the links between climate and plant and animal life.  The talk commences with a brief overview of the Namib climate.  It continues with the relationship between the wind systems and dune formation and the distribution of life among the dunes.  Then the adaptations and symbiotic relationships that enable plants and animals to survive this harsh environment are described.  Finally, some thoughts are given about the potential for climate change in the region.
